As above, so below

Astrology is a language that’s rooted in the symbolism of the energy, position, and movement of the celestial bodies (the planets). It’s a 2,000-year-old language and system that has been practiced and utilized cross-culturally. Cultures from around the world have used it to track seasonal shifts and events. And there’s a reason it has stood the test of time and continues to be practiced to this day.

Not only does astrology help guide you but it touches the heart and soul of who you are. It illuminates who you are beyond the layers and conditioning that can sometimes muddy the lens of who you are. And this is why my love for it grew. To quote my favorite astrologer, Steven Forrest, “The real purpose of astrology is to hold a mirror before the evolving self, to tell us what we already know deep within ourselves.”

I was introduced to a book called “The Inner Sky” by Evolutionary Astrologer Steven Forrest in 2019. His writing touched my heart and helped me weave my understanding of myself and my internal landscape on a much deeper level. Unlike popular astrology that can tend to label certain signs and placements as “good” or “bad,” Steven doesn’t. His take on astrology comes from a compassionate, encouraging and empowering lens: that every person has the capacity to grow, change, and evolve at any time. No matter what path you’ve traveled, you always have another chance to get it right. He believes that you were born with the chart you have for a reason and it is perfect for your evolution. In essence, he teaches that your chart is your soul’s lesson plan. You’re here to learn certain lessons and your chart reveals them and the road map to your evolution for living a meaningful and fulfilled life.

One of the intentions I set last year was to study astrology (beyond self-studying). I came across two astrologers who I considered being mentored by but I held off. That summer, my friend brought Steven Forrest’s online astrology school to my attention and I knew this program was it. To learn astrology from the person whose books, words and views of astrology I deeply resonated with was synchronistic. What I’ve learned about evolutionary astrology is this:

Astrology paints an intricate portrait of who you are all contained in one snapshot. Not only is it a 360-degree snapshot of the sky the moment you were born, reflecting the position of the planets the moment you took your first breath, but it reveals who you are at your core, who you came here to be, the lessons you’re here to learn and the tools contained within you to successfully navigate them.

It’s a doorway into how the cosmos express themselves through you, psychologically and personally. Your natal chart shows you your strengths, aspirations, and blind spots and the well-spring of potential that lives inside of you. Evolutionary Astrology illuminates the heart of who you are and that alone is transformational. It helps you in truly embracing and accepting all of the complexities that exist inside of you. It shows you that you can be gentle and empathetic, structured and focused, passionate and courageous, curious and eccentric and that all of these facets that make up who you are can harmoniously exist within you. You don’t have to put yourself in a box. You can choose to express different aspects of yourself in different areas of your life.

It shines a light into what areas within you and outside of you require nurturance, inspiration, support and focus, and the tools you have available to do so. It shows you what you need to feel centered, why you’re drawn to certain subjects, people and environments, your motivations, skills, gifts and so much more. And that’s what makes it a beautiful tool for healing, self-exploration, growth, and self-actualization. Astrology shows you the potential, both visible and hidden, that lies within you and the spectrum of possibilities you have to create a purposeful life in a way that’s unique to you.

Comfort & Growth

Staying in a comfort zone that we’ve outgrown allows for the comfort of safety (aka knowing what to expect), but it doesn’t allow room for further growth and expansion. We eventually reach a point when our comfort zone keeps us stagnant. It begins to feel limiting and restricting. The inauthenticity of living there seeps into our being and it starts to drain us rather than support us. It starts to feel tired and monotonous like we are stunting our growth and momentum in the world. It no longer brings us a sense of comfort.

We will know when we have outgrown our comfort zone because our desire to wander out of our current zone becomes our focal point. As we outgrow old ways of being, behaviors, and mindsets, we naturally outgrow our comfort zone too. A strong indication that we have outgrown our zone is that it will start to feel inauthentic to who and where we are now. It will feel like we are blocking ourselves from moving in the direction of our desired destination. We will know when it’s time to venture out of our comfort zone because our perspective shifts from that of comfort and safety to that of exploration.

The beauty of comfort zones is that they provide a safe space for us to grow into who we are becoming, yet we will continuously outgrow them. It gifts us with the gentleness we need to grow at our own pace and in our timing. Our comfort zones serve as a sort of incubator that nourishes us while we flourish into our next state of being, our next stage of growth, our next full potential.

Astrologically, this is what Cancer season gifts us. Cancer is symbolized by the crab. And like a crab, we eventually outgrow our shell. The shell represents our comfort zone. A temporary home for us to grow and expand. We are nourished there and in the care, tenderness and security of that nourishing home, we grow. And through that nourishment, we gain strength and become equipped to navigate the environment around us. Once we outgrow the protection of that shell, we step outside of it and make our way to a bigger shell. One that’s supportive of where we are going and who we are in this moment, which leads us to the next season and journey we’re about to embark on, Leo season

Leo season is about stepping out on the stage and sharing our gifts, our creative self-expression, and light. And it’s in the comfort of our inner home/shell/zone, Cancer season, that we find the courage to step into this next stage of life and express ourselves from this new and authentic space where we lead with courage, heart, and purpose like Leo.

The Root of Your Inspiration

The crown chakra is the seventh chakra. It is our source of divine inspiration and connection. Wisdom, bliss, higher consciousness, awareness, and oneness are experienced here.

The crown chakra enables us to connect to the world beyond the five senses. It allows us to feel and know that we are connected to something beyond the physical realm. It’s our direct connection to source, the universe, the divine (whatever you choose to call it). It’s our connection to our higher self, our unconditioned and eternal self, the divine within us all.

This center communicates through energy. An energy that allows us to feel connected to something bigger than ourselves, that transcends the physical in all ways. It’s where our individual consciousness meets a higher consciousness. Just like the third eye chakra connects us to our inner knowing, having an open connection to our crown allows us to tune into a ‘clear knowing’ that we feel and know to be true without any logical explanation as to how we know this information. This is also experienced through receiving ideas or creative ideas that appear out of nowhere.

When we’re connected to this chakra we can experience a deep connection to the world around us. We understand that we are all interconnected and that everything in the world is interwoven. We know that we are not separate from one another and that our individual actions contribute to the well-being of the collective/one another.

Today’s Practice: A meditation

Take three deep breaths and connect to the stillness within you. Move your attention to your root and feel the connection to the earth below you, deep down into the earth’s heart, its core. Allow this calming energy to rise into your body moving through all of your centers. Once at the crown, imagine a white light raining down from above pouring into your crown, third eye, and down your body through all of your centers. Imagine this white light surrounding your entire body. Rest in this stillness and receive any messages that may come through. When you are ready, open your eyes and take note of any messages or ideas that came through.

The third eye chakra is the sixth chakra. It is the seat of our wisdom. Our inner knowing. Intuition, imagination, self-awareness & reflection are experienced in this center.

Having an open connection to this chakra allows us to access our inner wisdom. An inner truth and knowing that goes beyond the physical. Our inner knowing is not seen but felt. It’s deep inner wisdom that goes beyond reason and logic. Through stillness, we access our intuition. Through stillness, our intuition speaks to us. It helps us to see beyond our limitations and brings us clarity, peace, and hope.

Our intuition is our inner guidance. Our internal compass. It leads the way and guides us. The visions and messages that our intuition shows us don’t always apply to everyday reason and logic. It transcends all of that and shows us what is possible, what is true. And so, when our intuition reveals itself to us, we can trust and take aligned action, sit with its message or bypass its wisdom and choose to follow a more practical route. No matter what you choose to do with its messages, know that our intuition is always working for us. It can bring us more ease and flow, more lightness.

Our intuition also serves as our witness. It isn’t governed by emotion or thought. It sees beyond the mind. It is still and grounded yet vast. It gifts us with deep realizations, insights, and guidance that is always available to us. It’s the part of us that knows the way and the answer. The access point to our inner wisdom, knowing, and guidance.

Today’s Practice: Your intuition is always speaking to you. What message(s) has your intuition been sending you lately? It could be something as simple as making a shift in your morning or night routine, starting a project you’ve been thinking about, or letting go of something that is no longer in alignment with who you are in this moment. How can you honor this inner knowing and yourself?
